Cranberry Thanksgiving

For some reason I can’t seem to post about the books we do in Five In A Row in a timely fashion! A few weeks ago we rowed Cranberry Thanksgiving by Wende and Harry Devlin.5150V6PDZ4L__BO2,204,203,200_PIsitb-sticker-arrow-click,TopRight,35,-76_AA300_SH20_OU01_ I LOVED this book and we had a lot of fun with it! Here is what we did:

One of the messages in the book was don’t judge a book by its cover. To really illustrate this to the girls I wrapped three boxes in pretty wrapping paper and inside I put a little note that said I LOVE YOU and for the fourth gift I wrapped up a piece of candy in waded up paper. Of course the pretty presents went first and Emily cried a little because she got stuck with the ugly one. Of course once she opened it the other girls really wished they had picked that one. I let them all have a piece of candy of course but I thought it was a good lesson!

We made the cranberry bread recipe from the book. The girls did a great job taking turns mixing all of the ingredients. I wish I would have gotten a picture of the finished product but we were too busy eating it:) We also made homemade butter, by shaking heavy cream for a long time,  to slather spread on the bread. The girls like shaking the cream but they didn’t want to do it long.

Made turkey cookies

Talked about our favorite Thanksgiving food

Listened to We Gather Together on you tube many times

Did some experiments from here on cranberries:

  • touch them
  • smell them
  • see if they floated
  • see if they bounce
  • squish them
  • taste them (you can see how sour they were by Ellie’s expression)

We went to this website to see what a cranberry bog looks like and find out how and where cranberries are grown

The last thing we did was a turkey craft from Michael’s but it was a little challenging so we let them glue it to construction paper instead.DSC01288

That about wraps up Cranberry Thanksgiving!
